While the situation is regrettable, and more holidays are expected to face the same fate before the year is out, the company asserts that several steps can be taken to get into the holiday spirit.

The company points to an article they published back in July, shortly after the 4th of July, Independence Day. In it, they describe certain scenarios that are now taking place almost exactly as predicted, including the need to remain indoors during other holidays this year. However, this in turn means that the pointers they offered in this article are still valid to this day — and will be for some time to come. As such, HDRG is encouraging their community to check out the article once more and explore what they can do to stave off the holiday gloom.

In ‘Lessons From Celebrating A Holiday In A Lockdown,’ the company says, “So, how was your 4th of July? Did you celebrate our nation’s independence day with such fun and revelry as you used to. I bet $100 you did not. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. July 4, 2020 will be marked in history as an Independence Day that Americans celebrated indoors. Did that sound sad? Yes, it is.”

Independence Day arrives around the midway point of each year, and the vast majority of Americans view it as one of their most celebratory holidays, with the end of year celebrations possibly being the only possible contender. The thought of going even a single year without spending this holiday outdoors in as extravagant a fashion as one is able may not have even occurred to anyone prior to 2020, and HDRG is certain that just as many people were bitterly hoping the pandemic would cease in time to celebrate it. However, this did not come to pass, and it now appears that several other holidays will be spent in much the same way.

Despite this bleak outlook, the company states that all is not lost, and there are still ways to enjoy the holidays and sustain a festive spirit. In fact, the team at HDRG believes that finding ways to experience joy during a crisis is incredibly important for everyone’s mental health, and few crises have been as daunting as the COVID-19 pandemic. This is why they are reaching out to support their community in these times of need.

As the article states, “there might still be some more holidays to come with everyone still in the comforts of their home while the threat of coronavirus still rages outdoors.” It adds, “So, with that in mind, let us remember the lessons we learned in what was possibly the weirdest holiday we experienced in our lifetimes.”

One of the cornerstones of modern Independence Day celebrations is fireworks. While this past Independence Day did indeed see communities enjoying firework displays, they were somewhat less enjoyable due to the fact no one could gather in large groups at an open location for the best view. Instead, the best many were able to do was enjoy nearby fireworks from their backyard. HDRG points out that this presents an opportunity for people to bring out their creative side and capture the fireworks as creatively as possible in photographs.

To this end, amateur photographers should keep in mind that fireworks usually accompany New Year’s celebrations as well. If they missed a chance to practice their photography in July, they now have some time to get ready before December 31st arrives.

HDRG has one more tip for those missing their holiday fun, so all are invited to check out the full blog post on their website to learn more. The website offers additional details on their services as well, including the various types of damaged systems they can recover data from and so on. The COVID-19 crisis is an unprecedented event, and the ramifications are likely to be felt for years to come. Financial institutions predict that the world economy will face the worst depression since the Second World War, and with no end to the crisis in sight, the looming financial crisis is likely to be worse than most people may have imagined.

“So many people are still being tested positive for the virus, and there seems to be no end in sight as the possibilities for a cure and a vaccine are still months, if not years away,” says the blog post. “The government can only hold their lockdowns as long as they can. China has already lifted its lockdown on Wuhan, believed to be the epicenter and origin of the virus, while reporting that its national economy will be contracting for the first time since the 1980s. Other “early adopter” countries like Japan and South Korea still demand their people maintain social distancing and prohibit public assemblies but have already allowed people to go back to work.”

With everyone being forced to stay home, digital and electronic companies will most likely benefit the most from the crisis. A number of companies, particularly those in industries like tourism, transportation and hospitality, cannot operate properly due to the fact that their customers are all stuck indoors and cannot work remotely. Companies that provide the equipment and software that people are using to work from home, however, are making a lot more money than they did before the crisis. Businesses whose services and goods that do not require or actually discourage social interaction are either unaffected or seeing record numbers in terms of growth. The pandemic has shown many individuals and businesses that working from home is not only possible but also convenient, and many will continue to work from home even after the crisis is over. Businesses that are prospering now are likely to continue prospering long after COVID-19 becomes a distant memory.

In their blog post, Hard Drive Recovery Group explores how working from home is likely to become the norm, not the exception. “Employees have for weeks, experienced a change in their style of work as they have been spared of having to dress up and commute to their offices,” says the blog post. “Many have found this practice favorable for them, and even once the crisis ebbs, it will be difficult for companies to not allow their employees to continue working from home, as they may not be able to afford overhead expenses (office rent, utilities, operating expenses) anew. Moreover, travel restrictions will be stricter, so companies may indeed encourage employees to stay at home and still be productive members of the company.”

International cooperation is likely to see significant changes. At the moment, countries are isolating themselves from each other by closing their borders and discouraging foreign visitors from entering their countries. Once the crisis is over, however, countries are likely to develop new best practices regarding how to monitor and report crises and coordinate responses. Due to the failure of many countries around the world to prepare adequately for crises like the one the world is currently facing, many lives have been lost. As a result, countries around the world will be looking into how best to respond to pandemics in future.

Hard Drive Recovery Group offers data retrieval services aimed at helping people recover data that they may have lost for any of a variety of reasons. The company has been offering professional recovery services for over 20 years. With many people working from home due to COVID-19, the likelihood of losing data is higher than ever before, and the services of companies like Hard Drive Recovery Group are in very high demand. There’s the COVID-19 pandemic that has had large segments of the world population on lockdown, which has led to most of us to work from home for fear that we can get the virus. Then, civil unrest ensued as those demanding for racial equality took to the streets despite lockdown orders, only to be compounded by those who are protesting the strict lockdown measures such as the closing of businesses and wearing of face masks when in public. One thing is for sure, though: All these developments have surely done a number on our mental well-being.

Because most of us have been stuck in our houses, all sorts of activities have been confined in the various parts of our residences. Meals can be taken anywhere without set times, kitchen counters have become a common site for video conferences, and watching TV shows have transferred from the living room to the bed, just so that we can squeeze one more episode of The Crown or Money Heist. And yes, for most of us dedicated to working, our reviews of office documents go beyond 5 o’clock. With anxiety, uncertainty, and fear of the state of our health and future, we have become a world of unrest.

Sleeping habits have been compromised for most of us because we want to make sure we don’t slack off at work, we want to be constantly updated of friends and family we haven’t seen in months by checking on social media accounts every 10 minutes, and we want to keep some normalcy in our lives by still being updated on our favorite TV shows. All of these in exchange for not having enough sleep. With that, it is hoped that we realize that there is a problem and that it should something that we need to act on because rest and sleep are quite important to both our physical and mental health.

The study

The pandemic has forced everyone into lockdown, so most of us may have shared experiences about working from home. A majority of us find it difficult to stick to a routine because once we are about to get into the groove of a habit, something happens that throws us off. Then, we develop into bad habits like sitting and staring into our laptop for hours and disrupt our sleeping patterns. No wonder recent studies reveal that since the pandemic, the world has failed on getting enough sleep.

Nearly 66% of participants blur the boundaries between work and life, while 55% find it difficult to switch off.

(Via: https://sleepstandards.com/work-from-home-and-sleep-patterns/)

Are you ready to be consistent?

It goes without saying that getting enough sleep has positive effects on our health. But with everything going on in the world, there are just too many distractions that hinder us from getting it. Moreover, good sleep can only be achieved when people commit and develop a habit out of it. Thus, we need to be consistent with our habits so that sleeping will come to us naturally. According to celebrated author Malcolm Gladwell, it takes 21 days to form a habit. James Clear counters with 66 days. The question is, are you ready to invest anywhere from 21 to 66 days of consistently sleeping at the same time, zero distractions in your quest to have enough sleep?

You can help your body establish a defined internal rhythm by keeping bedtimes, wake-up times, meals and exercise on a somewhat consistent schedule. Danforth pointed out that each of these activities sends signals to the brain, which regulates the body’s internal clock and can cue the release of melatonin, a hormone that can relax the body and help you get to sleep.

(Via: https://today.duke.edu/2020/07/3-ways-improve-your-sleep-during-covid-19)

Keep work and sleep separately

As mentioned earlier, it has become a norm for most of us to bring work even in bed. Whether it is to check some documents before getting our z’s or being in the comforts of bed for a late-night video conference, we seem to have converted our beds into an extended workstation. Moreover, because we bring our work to bed, the blue light emitted from our gadgets can further delay sleep. Thus, we need to make an effort to keep work out of the bedroom. Your bed should only be for sleeping, all other activities such as eating, social media checking, and especially working, must not be permitted.

When it comes to one’s bedroom to ensure a good night’s rest, Mrs Lythgoe advised: “Ensure your bedroom is the perfect place to get a good night’s kip.

“Firstly, be sure to avoid working in your bedroom if you are working remotely during lockdown.

“Associating your bedroom with a workplace may stop you from ‘winding down’ when you do want to go to sleep on an evening."

Make tech work for you

If you are still having difficulty sleeping, why not use apps that encourage meditation and rest? Instead of checking your social media accounts before going to sleep, tap on that mediation or white noise app that should lull you to sleep.

Sleep apps can be useful tools if you’re struggling to put some good sleep habits into practice, whether you need to overhaul your sleep hygiene completely or just keep a closer eye on it. Below, find the best sleep apps to help you build good habits, wind down at night, track your z’s, and wake up feeling refreshed.

Read the post in full at the following link: https://www.harddriverecovery.org/blog/want-to-be-effective-while-working-remotely/.

Due to COVID-19, around 5 billion people around the world now have to study or work from their homes. As a result, many economic analysts have said that the world economy would collapse and that the world is entering into an economic contraction on the level of the Great Depression and the aftermath of World War II. This will continue to happen unless people are able to adapt to the situation.

Fortunately, many individuals and businesses have been able to rise to the challenge posed by these strange times. Remote working has saved not only businesses but also entire economies from total shutdowns. Additionally, when done correctly, remote working can allow businesses to make a profit in addition to saving themselves. Certain companies have less expenses to sustain now as well, thanks to the closure of many shops and offices, which in turn can help them redirect resources to solidify their financial health. Now that working from home is becoming the norm, there are some tips that many can learn and apply to become more effective during remote work.

The first tip is to establish a routine. Most people had a routine that they held for weeks, months and even years while they were working for their respective organizations. The routine usually followed this route: waking up, commuting to work, arriving to the office on time, turning on the desktop, reviewing emails, having coffee, going to meetings, having lunch, doing work and then going home. While it is a different environment at home, many can still establish a similar routine for their remote working setup. Establishing routines helps one set expectations, get into a groove of working and develop positive habits that in turn allow a task to be completed in a simpler, easier and more streamlined manner.

The second tip is to have a dedicated work space. As much as possible, a person’s work space should be separated from other areas in the house. It is not a good working habit to work in bed or in other places where other activities such as eating and watching television are done. Separating a work space helps people get into a proper state of mind for working by allowing them to distance themselves from distractions, such as scrolling through social media or going through a Netflix marathon.

In fact, an article from Entrepreneur states, “If you operate an automotive paint shop, then chances are your workspace will be the garage or a freestanding shop out back. If you operate a dental practice from home, then your workspace will probably be a portion of your home used for a waiting room, a treatment room and an office. In other words, workspace requirements will vary depending on the business you choose to operate.”

The third tip is to maintain self-care. People should not base their entire lives and schedules around work. It is important to reserve some time to care for themselves. Practicing self-care after doing work allows people to maintain their sanity, especially during this period of unrest. They must also set aside some time for physical activities, meditation, journal writing, grooming or whatever self-care tasks that they like to do.

The last tip is to maintain clear communication with colleagues. Remote teamwork can lose its momentum when somebody suddenly goes missing in action and stops answering messages and emails. When this happens, other members will naturally suspect that their missing teammate may be slacking. This damages remote teamwork even further. Therefore, it is important to communicate issues and challenges to colleagues and supervisors. Everyone is in this crisis together, so most people can understand if a member of the team is having connectivity issues or needs to take a short break.

Hard Drive Recovery Group adds that losing data and important files on devices can derail someone’s remote working experience as well. Because of this, Hard Drive Recovery Group is pleased to inform their community that their technicians can provide assistance with recovering important files and repairing hard drives. Complete details can be found on the company’s website. Those who are in need of professional and reliable data recovery may also connect with Hard Drive Recovery Group via social media to stay up to date with their news and announcements.

A form of escapism? Most definitely. But then, with everyone subject to the very oppressive situation brought about by the pandemic, then yes, we can feel a bit entitled and get our entertainment in any way possible. In our case, these days, that source of entertainment can simply be stated in four words: Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Those of us who are in the loop when it comes to news but do not own any Nintendo Switch have surely heard of it in passing. After all, you may have most probably heard of Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood actually interacting with players whom he met in the game in real life. Yes, this is Coin Master (have you seen Jennifer Lopez ads of the game where she looks for people who attacked her village?) in real life. But not only Elijah Wood has gotten addicted to this game – other celebrities like Oscar-winner Brie Larson and Chrissy Teigen have also posted about the game in their social media accounts. Can you believe that even politician and media darling Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a player, too?

So, before you get into the Animal Crossing: new Horizons bandwagon and surrender your dollars to Nintendo and hours to play the game, here is some background information. Good luck on not getting hooked, because we are pretty sure you will be.

The game

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is already the fifth title of the Animal Crossing franchise. Also, if you don’t have a Nintendo Switch, then you ill not be able to play it, because the game is only available on this gadget. So no, it is not an app-based game. But don’t worry about it being the fifth installment of Animal Crossing already. You don’t need to know how to play the first four installments of the game to play this fifth title.

There’s so much to do in Animal Crossing even though it’s going to read so simple. The TL;DR: you slowly build a delightful island using basic equipment like a shovel and an axe.
(Via: https://www.sbnation.com/21267529/animal-crossing-new-horizons-nintendo-switch-questions-tom-nook)

Why so popular?

The popularity of Animal Crossing may actually be attributed to the fact that there are so many scenarios you can get into even if you’re stuck at home because of the pandemic lockdown. By playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it is almost like the player is vicariously outdoors. And that works in our situation nowadays because we can only explore the outside world vicariously. Imagine if Pokémon Go was introduced now, where going out is highly discouraged? How can you catch Pokémon when you are confined in the corners of your home?

The game proceeds in an open-ended fashion, and players are allowed to forge their own paths at their leisure. Players can collect furniture, craft items, fish, catch bugs, customize their characters, talk to villagers, visit other islands, and gain Bells, which is the form of in-game currency. The open concept of the game has proved to be its defining feature, as players are hooked in by the escapism aspect of the game.

Growth in spite or because of the pandemic?

Nintendo’s move to release this game during the pandemic is one genius move. In a world where everyone is looking for sources of indoor entertainment, the move to release a game is absolutely brilliant. No wonder Nintendo is reporting positive developments even during this anxiety-filled time.

“The number of consumers who started playing on Nintendo Switch because of this game continued to increase during the first quarter, from April to June 2020. Of all systems in the Nintendo Switch family that were played for the first time during this period, over half were used to play Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the first day.”

So popular it's in pop culture

The game has become so popular that celebrities have poured praises on it through social media. With social media being the prime source of information for may these days, it is inevitable that people have taken notice of the game because of glowing endorsements from famous people they follow. In turn, artists have only hopped into the game’s bandwagon, finding ways to collaborate and take advantage of its popularity to positively affect them.

Selena Gomez recently debuted a stripped-down version of her newest track with Trevor Daniel, “Past Life,” in an unexpected place: a late night talk show on Twitch that exists entirely within Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
In the area of ransomware attacks, not only have the incidences increased even if everybody is encouraged to stay indoors, the average size of ransomware payments has been on the uptrend. The increase of ransomware payments is not only just incremental but quite significant. The average payment to ransomware attackers in the 2nd quarter of 2020 according to a report by Coveware, has increased by 60% from the first quarter of this year, which is now at US$170,000. The trend, which has leaned towards increases, may be attributed to the various new options in tactics and the rise of new software. Ransomware attacks have become tailored to the targets, which thus have made them all the more dangerous and damaging.

Moreover, according to the Coveware report, a recent development in the second quarter of 2020 is the emergence of attackers who do not demand that high a ransom. The trend for this breed of attackers would be to use free or affordable ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) tools for hacking. These attackers would usually charge lower amounts as smaller businesses are usually being targeted. And this is what makes matters worse because as is, small businesses are already suffering because of the pandemic. When they are further victimized by ransomware attackers, that one more nail in the coffin of their impending death. The trend of attacking these small businesses should hopefully end for the sake of the economy and because they really do not need any more problems.

More data exfiltration?

According to various reports with regard to ransomware, ransomware attacks have come in the form of data exfiltration. The data exfiltration manner is different from other types of ransomware attacks in the sense that the attacker takes the data instead of just keeping it ransom. Once the attacker gets the data, the stolen data is then put up for sale on tech marketplaces and forums. In “usual” ransomware attacks, the data does not leave the server of the entity being attacked and the attacker just makes it impossible for the attacked to have access to the information unless a ransom is paid.

Traditional data exfiltration is itself a blend of data theft and extortion. A hacker compromises an organization’s defenses and exfiltrates sensitive data of measurable value—financial records, intellectual property, business data, and so on. After offering the data for sale on the black market to establish its value, the attacker then contacts the victim and demands a payment to prevent a sale.

(Via: https://www.a10networks.com/blog/ransomware-attacks-and-the-evolution-of-data-exfiltration/)

With more cases come higher demands

While the number of cases have gone higher, so have the demands for the ransom cost. While there are more attackers that are more comfortable with using cheaper versions of RaaS software, the number of attackers who prefer only big entities as they think it is their role to keep these big entities in check have also increased.

The average ransom payment in Q2 was $178,254, a 60% leap from the $111,605 average in Q1. Average ransom payments climbed steadily since 2018, which coincided with the arrival of the first “big game hunting” ransomware variants, BitPaymer and Ryuk.

(Via: https://www.coveware.com/blog/q2-2020-ransomware-marketplace-report#payment)

More low-end "DIY" ransomware attacks?

As mentioned above, more low-end attacks have also been occurring that target smaller businesses, where attackers use cheaper RaaS software.

The Dharma Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) operation makes it easy for a wannabe cyber-criminal to get into the ransomware business by offering a toolkit that does almost everything for them. A RaaS operation is a cybercrime model where the developers are in charge of managing the ransomware development and ransom payment system. At the same time, affiliates are responsible for compromising victims and deploying the ransomware.

(Via: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/dharma-ransomware-created-a-hacking-toolkit-to-make-cybercrime-easy/)

Prevention is better than cure

But how can businesses avoid the entire threat of ransomware attacks, though? Having strong IT infrastructure is still key.

A strong IT operations team is a weapon in security's arsenal, along with widespread security awareness across all employees -- in and out of IT. The IT team can prevent ransomware with regular patching and software updates, reduce the effect of an attack with good and frequent backups, lead the recovery to get systems up and running, and analyze logs to gain insights on the attack.

"With most of the employed world currently working at home to avoid the spread of COVID-19, apps and programs that make remote work easier have become household names. Zoom has grown to be one of the most popular remote working tools. We have noticed that many people have been far too quick to jump the gun and begin using these apps without considering the risks and security issues that may be inherent to them," states Maureen Davies of Hard Drive Recovery Group. While the concern with Zoom as a secure remote working platform has only increased over the past few weeks, HDRG states that users have not given enough weight to the comments from online security experts who question its security features and doubt the safety of users’ data on the platform.

Davies adds, "Zoom has been criticized by high-profile individuals in the past for safety concerns. While none of their demands have produced significant results, there are enough cases to make you question whether you should trust this company with your company's sensitive information. One of the most recent cases that come to mind is that of Letitia James, a New York attorney general. She demanded that the company inform the public of the lack of security measures they had taken to keep up with the sudden ballooning of their users. She questioned the company's ability to guarantee the well being of their users as well. While Zoom announced at the time that all their resources were focused on addressing safety and security issues raised by users in recent weeks, the underlying concern still remains despite their efforts to offer reassurance."

Whether or not Zoom is putting as much dedication as they claim into increasing the security of their app, one thing that is clear is that their efforts have not been enough to prevent unfortunate incidents from happening all over their platform. Zoom bombing has been an issue for a few weeks now, to the point where it has now caught the attention of the FBI. These video hijacking incidents present more than simple inconveniences, as students have been exposed to the antics of several individuals who join their classroom with malicious intentions. The FBI is already investigating numerous incidents of hackers infiltrating video meetings, shouting racial slurs and issuing threats. The Bureau is also looking into the connection between these hackers and ransomware hackers who, until recently, have also victimized businesses.

Another problem with Zoom's platform, according to Hard Drive Recovery Group, is the lack of end-to-end encryption. This is a feature that cybersecurity savvy users are always on the lookout for, as it secures communication platforms so that whatever goes into the platform can only be accessed by the users involved. While Zoom boasted in the past that their app used this well-regarded security measure, they have come around to admit that end-to-end encryption is not yet present on the platform. That is only of the many flaws in security that Zoom has been accused of possessing, and their criticism goes all the way back to early 2019.

Davies states, "Back in 2019, Zoom users were surprised when it was revealed that a hidden web server had been installed on user devices which could add the user to a call without his or her consent. Recently, a bud was discovered that could allow hackers to take over a Mac of a Zoom user through the device’s webcam and microphone. The company has yet to offer any reassurance or explanation for these issues, leading users to worry about what they are being exposed to when using the app."

Even some of Zoom's better features have been criticized, as the apps' attention tracker has been called out as a way of sneaking in-app surveillance to monitor their user's activities. This issue, along with several others, are thoroughly explained in Hard Drive Recovery Group's latest blog post, titled, ‘Is Zoom Helping Or Destroying Your Remote Work Efforts?’ Those interested are welcome to visit their site to read further or get in touch with the company’s representatives to follow up on any further inquiries.

Some of us would volunteer that they have lost a lot of joy because they miss going out and seeing friends and family. Some would claim they miss the outdoors as they are just cooped up in their houses, not being allowed to explore anything beyond their doorstep and smell the fresh air and flowers. Unfortunately, some of us would say they have lost acquaintances, friends, and family to COVID-19. And then, for some of us working at home, losing important data because of missing files and documents is one thing they have experienced and are now suffering from. Oh, what a tragedy! Losing important files could get anyone in trouble and for some of us, may cost us our jobs, which at this time is something nobody can afford to lose.

Losing files and documents can happen to even the best of us because of two reasons. One of the reasons important files may suddenly disappear is because our devices, whether a laptop or desktop, may have gotten damaged. When your hard drive crashes, when you drop your laptop, or if somehow, your hard drive gets in contact with a magnet, there is a huge chance that your files may get erased. Another reason a lot of files get lost is, unfortunately, our carelessness. We usually get mouse clicker happy when we want to free up some space for some reasons. We think that fewer files will make our computers faster, so we delete files without too much care. Then, there are also times that we click on “Select All” when we transfer unnecessary files to the Recycle Bin and click on “Empty Recycle Bin” and “Yes” without really doublechecking which files will we affected. Thus, we end up deleting files we should not really.

So, to help you with recovering important files and documents, what should you do? Do you go for a DIY strategy and save some money in exchange for a risky procedure or should you leave it up to the professionals?

Should you DIY data recovery?

When you decide to do data recovery by yourself, you would need a data recovery software. This method would be most effective if you accidentally deleted your file or if your hard drive was suddenly corrupted. Even with files that have supposedly been deleted “permanently,” these software suites have proven to be quite effective.

Data recovery is helpful in many ways whether you are at home or in a professional setting. Your photos, videos, and voice recordings amassed and saved on your computer or an external storage medium can’t be recreated or relived. Data recovery helps you get back those treasured digital memories.

(Via: https://www.stellarinfo.com/blog/know-about-data-recovery/)

Things to look for

So, what should you exactly look for when you look for DIY data recovery software. There are quite a number of software available in the market today, each claiming to be the best, that the options can be overwhelming. Do not forget the features and benefits when winding down with your selection.

Good data recovery software should give you the option to preview your corrupted files before initiating the retrieval process sometimes you might spot a file that is corrupted but after restoring, you realize that it is not what you are looking for. Therefore, good data recovery software should have a preview feature to help you save time in finding the right files that you want to retrieve.

(Via: https://www.lifehack.org/499811/8-best-tips-to-choose-a-good-data-recovery-software)

When to go for data recovery services

If you have the funds, if you don’t want to take the risk of letting those lyrics disappear forever, then you can leave the data recovery task to the professionals.

You can get the necessary help from an IT company that provides these services if you are feeling apprehensive about doing it yourself when you want to back up your data. Doing it this way ensures a professional will do the work, and your data is safe. It also streamlines the process of securing the data as the backup is done remotely. Then, everything else can be done when you set it up.

With many people having to work from their homes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hard Drive Recovery Group has decided to offer tips that might help make their readers’ experiences with working from home more productive and less strenuous. Not being able to leave the house even for work has proven to be very difficult for some people but, done correctly, it can be just as safe, secure and productive as working at an office.

“We are in this together, and we are not sure of when this lockdown will be over, so we might as well make sure our remote work experience is maximized,” says the blog post. “So, how do we make the most of remote work to improve our experience, let our companies enjoy the fruits of our efforts and make the world economy suffer a little less? We have a few tips to offer that could make this remote work situation better for everyone.”

It is estimated that four billion people around the world are working from home due to lockdowns imposed by their governments around the world in response to the rapidly spreading COVID-19 virus. This means that billions can no longer meet face-to-face, be it for social or business reasons. There are, however, multiple apps that allow video conferencing which, while not the same as meeting in real life, make communication a lot easier. Communicating through audio calls or emails and text messages can make it difficult to trust the other party when discussing business as it is nearly impossible to see and judge body language and facial expressions.

Certain software tools can make sending and receiving work files easier. As the blog post says, “If you casually ask someone working from home to send you a file, the first option they will most probably consider is send an email and attach the document to it. But then, sending a file through email may not exactly be the most efficient way of sharing files nowadays, considering that there are apps or programs that would allow you to share the file and more. Look around and share with the team apps and programs that make remote working a better collaborative experience.”

When working from home, it is generally to strike a balance between work and leisure. Being stuck at home can have negative effects on one’s emotional state, but it is important to remain positive during meetings and virtual team gatherings. This can improve the moods of one’s co-workers and improve the overall working experience. It is also important to separate work from leisure as well. Working from home does not imply an increase in working hours, and the blog past advises that workers make it clear when they are on and when they are off the clock.

Hard Drive Recovery Group has a number of services that can help one recover lost documents or manage data. The company provides safe and secure hard drive recovery from Mac and PC hard disk drives using both software and clean room hands-on data retrieval. Every day, the company recovers thousands of megabytes of data for individuals and companies across North America.

A number of clients have great reviews of the data recovery service. One client, T. Chalmers, shares, “On behalf of everyone here, I want to give my utmost thanks for saving our database. While we can't say much about our IT services company (who really dropped the ball here), I have nothing but good things to say about you guys. Without Hard Drive Recovery Group, we would have been in a really brutal situation. I also appreciate the service I received, as you guys kept me notified of the progress every single step of the way. Now that you helped us put a new backup plan in place (and a new IT provider), I feel like we're on very steady ground."

The coronavirus has put our lives on an indefinite pause as the plans that we have zealously tried to plot and implement at the start of the year has been out in the backburner or worse, turned into pipe dreams because the timing has suddenly become askew or finances have suddenly become scarce. It is not actually because people have become more fickle-minded, but even if we have the tools to execute a project, there is somewhat a more enticing proposition: To just curl in bed all day, Netflix and chill. There is just a compulsion in these uncertain times to also be uncertain and just let go – let the law of que sera, sera unfurl in your life. Is it really the best thing to be committed to something nowadays? The thing is, things are so uncertain that if we commit ourselves to something, there is a chance that the thing we have committed to will eventually not materialize because of circumstances beyond our control. So, we end up having this fear of commitment and resolve to ourselves that maybe now is not really the right time to exercise the value of being committed.

The issue of commitment has also been prevalent in the world of technology. Since the pandemic, it seems that companies, not just individuals. have also become allergic to being committed. Participation in major events have become erratic, product launches have been postponed until canceled, and some businesses, unfortunately, have to say goodbye because they want to cut their losses earlier rather than prolonging their agony. We have rounded up some items in the technology that have been canceled, postponed, or moved.

Toshiba Says Sayonara to Laptops

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Japanese tech company Toshiba was one of the trusted names when it comes to laptops. Toshiba was then known for producing very sturdy laptops that do not get easily malfunction. Then, other manufacturers introduced more laptops that are more affordable, chipping Toshiba’s formerly stable share of the market. Now, it’s goodbye for them in the laptop production field.

Japanese tech giant Toshiba will no longer make laptops after more than three decades in the business, the company has announced.

On August 4, Toshiba transferred its last outstanding share in Dynabook Inc., its laptop computing arm, to Sharp, another Japanese electronics corporation.

Google Play Music's Last Note

Google, for all its dominance in some services such as search engines, the Android operating system, and app marketing, has failed in some markets, including music. Somehow consumers really didn’t catch on to Google Play Music as much as they warmed up to platforms like iTunes, Apple Music, and Spotify. So now, Google Play Music is playing its swan song.

Google Play Music has been given the death sentence by Google, and today the company has announced a bit more detail about how its execution will be carried out. The main message from today's blog post is "back up your music now," as Google says it will wipe out all Google Music collections in December 2020.

(Via: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2020/08/google-music-shutdown-starts-this-month-music-deleted-in-december/)

See You Next Year, Halo Infinite

In a time of pandemic when people are in a constant search for anything and everything that would provide them a brief respite from thinking of the dire situation of the world through escapist entertainment, it is a bit suspect for Microsoft to push back the release of one their most profitable games, Halo Infinite.

It’s an unexpected move, seeing as Microsoft has been pushing Halo Infinite hard as the primary reason to purchase the upcoming Xbox Series X console. The move means Microsoft is delaying its biggest launch title.

(Via: https://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/halo-infinite-delayed-until-2021/?itm_medium=topic&itm_source=50&itm_content=2x2&itm_term=2356592)

Disney Delays Movies

Alas, as audiences have moved from going to the theaters to consuming everything online, it is inevitable for entertainment companies like Disney to push back the release date of their movies. And now, the much-anticipated and much-pushed back Mulan has already been reported to be released online instead of being released in cinemas once they become operational again.

All scheduled "Star Wars" and "Avatar" films between 2021 and 2027 are being pushed back one year, the company announced Thursday. That means there will be no "Avatar 2" next year and no new Star Wars film in 2022.

The article can be viewed on the company’s official website.

Most people have been in lockdown for several months and, at this point, have probably gotten used to the new norm of effectively working at home. However, many still miss all of the quirks and the perks of working from their office, such as free instant coffee, having noisy and nosy workmates and having important documents printed on command. However, with the help of modern technology, people can now have the advantages of working in an office while continuing to work at home. In fact, document management and workflow implements may be made available so that they can have an easier time with remote working. There are also some great and easily implementable practices that teams and individuals can use to develop systems for processing documents.

As noted in the blog post, document management can be made more seamless and effective by allowing team members to collaborate on documents as opposed to just letting them have access to the document itself. However, there should be an auditing tool for the purpose of recording the actions taken by all recipients of the documents. Other features that can be added include automated document creation, multiple tab views of the document and records of correspondence. In fact, Techgenix, a leading online IT resource, states, “Thanks to growing and emerging enterprise collaboration tools, working from home or any remote location can now be almost as productive and rewarding as working from the office. These remote work collaboration tools allow employees and companies to work together on professional projects and plans while not working under the same roof. They are meant to reduce the bottlenecks of communication gaps, feedback and approval processes and more. They also help drastically in core aspects such as communication, planning, project and task management as well as file and data sharing.”

Another action that can be taken for more effective document management, as advised by Hard Drive Recovery Group, is turning on annotations. There are collaborative platforms (such as OneDrive and Google Drive) that allow users to easily distribute documents to teammates and other involved parties. These platforms also allow recipients to review, download and edit documents. However, there are situations where people do not want other people to make changes to the documents but still want to know the other party’s thoughts. In these situations, turning on annotations can be extremely useful. Turning on annotations and comments allows other parties to give their thoughts and suggestions without making alterations to the documents in question. This is important as providing and receiving feedback are key principles of effective collaboration.

Teams can also make sure to get their electronic approvals arranged. Right now, most people from rank and file to management are working from home. This can make getting proper approvals for documents from higher-ups difficult. Using email trails is an option, but this is neither the most efficient nor the most audit-friendly method for giving and receiving approvals. This is why it is important to regulate requirements and rules for electronic signatures and utilize electronic signature software that complies with legal standards. This helps make giving and receiving electronic approvals as flawless as possible. Workamajig, a company that helps businesses of all shapes and sizes to streamline their operations, explains, “Getting documents approved in a structured, timely fashion is one of the more understated challenges in project management. You might have everything lined up perfectly, but if a key stakeholder doesn’t give the ‘okay’ on schedule, things can go downhill quickly.”

Additionally, working from home presents the possibility of losing documents that are stored on people’s devices, which usually happens when hard drives are damaged. To combat this, Hard Drive Recovery Group is pleased to offer safe and secure hard drive data recovery for Mac and PC hard disk drives (using both software and clean room hands-on data retrieval techniques). They are dedicated to finding the most affordable and most efficient hard drive recovery services for their clients. They have almost 20 years of experience in data recovery, and they charge flat rates for their services. They also give accurate estimates to their clients before they provide their services. This means that clients will not be surprised at the cost of their services. Additionally, they do not charge a fee if they fail to recover the data.

Complete details about the company’s wide range of data recovery services can be found on their website. Alternatively, clients may connect with Hard Drive Recovery Group via social media to stay up to date with their news and announcements.

When most of us, if not everyone, is working from home and only armed with an Internet connection, it is inevitable that sharing of important files and documents is one skill that everybody should already be a master of. After all, hasn’t it been more than five months and running since the world started this anxiety-driven quarantine where everybody needs to practice a safe distance from everyone else? So by now, we would have already developed a deep appreciation towards devices and apps that allow working from home to be that easy and convenient. Who knew that such things like uploading, sharing, and downloading files would become second nature to us, as essential as knowing how to participate in a videoconference (something which we should be skilled with even outside work because Facetime-ing, Skype-ing, or Zoom-ing relatives from across the country and the world is such a welcome relief) or wearing a face mask and practicing social distancing when outdoors.

One of the most popular file-sharing and cloud storage apps that people use whether for work or for other purposes is Google Drive. Since Google Drive is obviously part of the Google suite of programs that is basically ubiquitous all over the world, then it goes without saying that you would be in the very small minority if you haven’t come across the platform. So, if you’re still at a bit of a loss with Google Drive and making the most out of it, here are some information about it:

Upload and Share Documents

In these times when nobody is in the office and everyone is working at home, sharing of pertinent files is of the essence. This is where Google Drive becomes a convenient platform because email attachments can only be of a certain size. If you need to share documents or files of a larger size, your email server wouldn’t be able to handle it and this is where Google Drive comes in handy.

The first method is the simpler of the two, and it involves dragging the file or folder from your desktop, and dropping it into the browser window. The second option is to click on the "New" button on the top-left side of the screen and select either "File upload" or "Folder upload."

(Via: https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-google-drive-guide#how-to-use-google-drive)

Download to Access Documents Offline

One of the most pressing features of a storage and file sharing platform for people working from home is the ability to download the shared files so that they can access it even if they are not connected to the net. This feature is very important especially for those who have intermittent WiFi or Internet connection.

You can use many Google Apps features offline, but only if you first set them up while you have internet access. Keep in mind that if you make edits while offline, collaborators will not see your edits and any edits collaborators who are online make will supersede your changes. Once you regain internet access, any offline edits will be synced.

(Via: https://it.stonybrook.edu/help/kb/accessing-google-drive-files-offline-on-a-mobile-devicecomputer)

Google Groups on Google Drive

If you want to share a file or document to not just one but several of your team members, it is not only possible but more convenient if you make a Google Group composed of these people and share your file with that group.

One of the advantages of Google Shared drives is that the group owns all of the documents in the Shared drives, so even if one member leaves, all of the documents remain. You can use Workgroup Integration to create a Google Group from current Workgroups. Once the permissions are granted to your Google Group, access to the Shared drives is automatically adjusted when you add or remove members from your Stanford Workgroup, allowing you to manage access entirely from within Workgroup Manager.

(Via: https://uit.stanford.edu/service/gsuite/shareddrives/create)

Multiple File Sharing on Google Drive

Another convenient feature of Google Drive is that it allows you to share multiple files all at once, not only one at a time.

If you want to share all the files in a folder, select the folder, click the Share icon in the upper- right-hand corner, enter the email addresses, and then click Send.

If any person you share with has a non-Google email address, you will have the option of either recommending that they sign in with a Google account or turning on link sharing.

Meanwhile, if you have files that you have lost because you were too stubborn or lazy to use online storage solutions, allow us to help you. Their views on this topic were shared in a recent blog post that can be read in full on the company’s website.

"The past few months have been remarkably difficult for everyone. While we are all waiting for this to be over, few of us have stopped to think about how things may never go back to normal," states Maureen Davies, a representative of Hard Drive Recovery Group. According to the local tech support specialists, this pandemic has stirred up new possibilities in several parts of everyday life. While not every change brought upon by COVID-19 is negative, weighing the impact that these changes will have in the future, both short and long term, is of remarkable importance.

Davies continues, "While we know that, currently, all that we have to do is to stay at home, the most remarkable changes to our everyday life are unlikely to go away in a post-COVID-19 world. The way we live has changed, perhaps forever, and while this is not necessarily a bad thing, thinking about how things may never be the same again is truly an extraordinary exercise. From automation to remote classrooms and offices, we are in for a treat after the pandemic ends, and while nothing is set in stone, we have put together a list of what we think will never be the same."

Hard Drive Recovery Group compiled a list of things most likely to change in the near future in another recent blog post. The most likely change, according to the local tech support specialists, will be the automation of everyday tasks.

Davies states, "Businesses will be under pressure to be liquid so as to stay afloat. Thus, costs will have to cut, particularly those that do not return profits. Employees who are not as productive as they should be will be cut off, automated procedures may need to be adapted and other employees may have to continue with remote work for businesses to save on operating costs. All signs point to the fact that the most simple jobs will be occupied by machines, overseen by people who can manage and keep an eye on several of these automated workers at the same time. Even in jobs that cannot be occupied by machines, we are more likely to see companies hiring remote workers, cutting down on costs significantly."

The areas that cannot have their costs reduced will be forced to take great leaps in the advancement of their respective technologies. Significant med-tech innovations and telemedicine are expected, as the government will most likely look for ways to prevent the overwhelming situation that hospitals and other medical facilities have had to deal with over recent months. This is where telemedicine and other remote medicinal services come in. Once the crisis recedes, remote health care will become the emerging default, if it is not already the default. Not only will telemedicine make everything cost-efficient to healthcare insurance providers and the patients themselves, doctors will also be able to provide their services to far more patients.

Online education is also very likely to continue increasing in popularity. This is already supported by the decline in student debt that has been observed recently, as students and their parents have demanded reimbursements for tuition and other fees because universities have opted to move classes online, an issue that is only likely to continue in the upcoming fall semester. Remote learning and its impending success will encourage more learners to go for this more affordable method since they can pursue the same education at a fraction of the cost. This will have a remarkably positive impact on the lives of most US residents, making superior education more accessible for everyone.

If there is something that this pandemic has taught us, it is that family memories are truly invaluable. Births, family vacations, school programs, graduations, weddings, Thanksgivings, and Christmas can only be truly appreciated if they were captured in old photo albums and VHS tapes. And knowing how precious yet delicate they are, the thought of converting these photos and videos into digital formats has surely been considered. The good news is, for photos, the process of digitizing them is quite easy and straightforward. Turning old videos that have been stored in VHS tapes to digital may be a bit more challenging, although there are a number of ways to do it.

If you have old family videos in VHS, take note that the VHS format is temporary and has a tendency to degrade. After all, we may have experienced some videos getting erased as we used the same tape where we recorded a momentous family to record a TV show. That only goes to show that the VHS format is not permanent. So, while you still have the time, why not make it a project to transport these videos to the digital era?

DIY Plan A: With a DVD recorder

One easy way is to have a DVD recorder. You would only need to spend on a VCR player, a DVD recorder, and some DVD-R discs where your videos will be transferred to. With some cords, you can connect them all to your TV and after some hours, viola! Your home videos will now be on digital format!

If you want to save some cash and are willing to put in a minimal amount of work, a DVD Recorder is an easy do-it-yourself option. It allows you to pop in a VHS (you will need a VCR for this), insert a DVD-R disc, and press record to dub the video over. There's a lot of waiting involved, but it isn't a ton of active work, and it's much cheaper than using a professional service if you have a lot of tapes.

(Via: https://sea.pcmag.com/gallery/30873/how-to-convert-vhs-home-movies-to-dvd)

DIY Plan B: Connecting your VCR with your computer

Now, if you don’t want to use a DVD recorder, another way would be to use your trusty computer and a VCR player. With cords to connect your VCR player and your computer, you can digitize these videos. Make sure you have some DVD-R discs (unless your computer has some seriously huge space where the digital videos will be saved to) so that your converted videos can be played not just on your PC or laptop, but also on your DVD player. Of course, you will also need a software that creates DVDs.

Connect your VHS video player to your PC using the cable or cables supplied with your chosen software. It should look something like the photo above. You may need a special Scart cable which has the red, white and yellow cables, or your video player may already have these outputs. (You won't be able to use front-mounted white, red and yellow connectors are these are almost always inputs - not outputs.)

Use a professional

If you want a professional to do it because you don’t want to be hassled by DIY and you think you may damage your old videos, there are digital transfer services you can take advantage of. There’s no need to invest in software and equipment, but you’ll have to shell out for their services, though. Also, you need of course to check whether the professional services near you are open or not, since a lot of stores are still closed.

Costco offers a digital transfer service through its Photo Center. You can transfer several types of videotapes to DVDs including VHS and S-VHS, Beta, VHS-C, Hi8, Digital 8, 8mm and MiniDV.

(Via: https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/columnist/komando/2016/09/02/digitizing-video-tapes/89551880/)

If you are considering using professional services to shift your home videos to digital, you may also need to trust the pros like Hard Drive Recovery Group if you need to recover some files that have gone missing. By the time we wake up, among the first things we do would be to grab our phones. Once we have successfully unlocked the screen, it is 100% sure that you get drowned with all the information you will encounter. You get updates on how many people in the US and every single country in the world have become positive of the COVID-19 virus, how many have recovered, and how many have perished. You then get told of what your friends are up to, how many plants they have decided to grow, how many of them have signed up for Black Lives Matter initiatives, and how many vacations and nights out have been hidden from you as people are finally posting throwback pictures in abandon.

So, while you read your news alerts and social media feeds, you get lost and fall into a rabbit hole of news and information and before you know it when you look up from your phone’s screen, it’s already noon. You’ve “wasted” half of the day just “reading” all sorts of information. The thing is, chances are high that you will repeat this cycle throughout the day and for days, weeks, and even months to come. And that is definitely not a healthy thing to do. Information overload is not healthy, especially since we also have to deal with the uncertainty of the world’s situation. All of these factors are something we cannot easily handle. There is a need to pace ourselves with this avalanche of information because there is only too much we can handle. How to? There are some ways.

Is social media a good news source?

It doesn’t take for scientific studies to make us realize that one of the leading sources, if not the number one source of information for people these days is social media. If you want to know something about the developments of the COVID-19 vaccine, you just go to your Google news alerts. Want to be updated with the US government? Just tap on Twitter. Wanna see how your friends have sharpened their culinary skills? Open your Instagram app. But is social media really a reliable source of information, though? Moreover, is it healthy for you to be informed so much with social media as your ultimate information source?

According to a newly published Pew Research Center report 55% of U.S. adults now get their news from social media either "often" or "sometimes" – an 8% increase from last year. About three-in-ten (28%) said they get their news "often," up from 20% in 2018.

(Via: https://www.forbes.com/sites/petersuciu/2019/10/11/more-americans-are-getting-their-news-from-social-media/#5b8d753b3e17)

Be more discerning

Apart from avoiding getting overwhelmed with the quantity of information you have access to and actually consume, you also need to be careful with the quality of information you accept. You should not allow yourself to take in each and every piece of information you get because that is going to screw up your psyche. Besides, you have to check the quality of your news sources because there are so many so-called media outfits that turn out to be purveyors of fake news.

Standards: What information does this outlet provide about who they are, their mission, and their fact-checking process or standards?

Show me the money: Who is paying for their work, and why? Is this news outlet’s business model dependent to some degree on generating “clicks”? If so, how might that have influenced this story?

(Via: https://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Society/2020/0430/Fake-news-101-A-guide-to-help-sniff-out-the-truth)

Stop the addiction

With the abundance of news and news sources, we also need to realize that with our reliance to social media to “keep us updated” on what’s going on with friends and the rest of the world is actually an addiction. Therefore, our overconsumption of news and the need to know everything is also an addiction. Since we all know that addictive behavior is not good at all, then we need to put a cap on news addiction.

Unless you're ready to drop off the grid and move to a log cabin in the wilderness, cutting tech out of your life completely is unrealistic. What you can do is try consuming tech more mindfully.

(Via: https://sea.pcmag.com/gallery/20618/how-to-wean-yourself-off-smartphones-and-social-media)

Goodbye, news alerts!

One effective way to kick the addiction to news would be to stop getting alerted with news on your gadgets. There is really no need to be updated in real time of how many people have become positive with the coronavirus, right? There is absolutely no point in getting informed that there are now thousands of people in, say Africa, who are now sick with the virus. Thus, your life will not end if you miss an update from Google about a protest in Indonesia or an explosion in Lebanon. They are important of course, but in the current state of your life, not really.

Sick of Google spamming your phone with notifications about news articles? They can be pretty annoying, especially if you have no interest in most of the featured stories. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to stop Google notifications for news articles completely or reduce and refine the news notifications you receive.

(Via: https://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Society/2020/0430/Fake-news-101-A-guide-to-help-sniff-out-the-truth)

Now that you know how to separate valuable and fake news, you may want to focus on other pressing matters, like trying to recover missing files and documents. The company is dedicated to providing high quality data recovery services to the residents of California and the surrounding areas.

Maureen Davies, a representative for Hard Drive Recovery Group, says, “The sudden onset of the COVID-19 crisis has meant that most, if not all of us, have been forced into staying home. However, life can’t just completely stop in its tracks, which means that we still have to get work done even as we fight this unseen enemy. Thankfully, advances in video conferencing technologies and online workspaces has meant that we are now able to work from home. Since most of us have not had the need for this technology in the past, we could all do with some tips on how to successfully pull off video conferencing meetings, especially since meetings are a large part of the modern working life.”

In a blog post shared on the company website, Hard Drive Recovery Group says the first part of succeeding in video conferences is to look the part. Looking the part in a video meeting will not just present the right image for the attendees of the meeting, but also affect the way one conducts themselves. Getting ready for a virtual meeting just as one would for a real-life meeting will go a long way to ensuring that the professional atmosphere is maintained and that the meeting is successful.

Something else that is very important is to make sure that the background of one’s video does not distract the participants of the meeting. Not everyone has a dedicated home office, which means that video conferences might be held from any place in the house. This could lead to something unflattering or distracting being in the background of the video, unless one takes care to avoid this scenario. One way to avoid this is to just clean everything from the background of where one will conduct the meeting from, but there is also the option to find a place in the house which is reasonably plain. Modern video conferencing software also allow an additional workaround to solve this problem, as they allow users to change the background to something else entirely.

Hard Drive Recovery Group also suggests that running a tech check is very important. In the blog post, the company recommends that everyone double check and make sure that their camera is functioning properly by attempting to record before the meeting even begins. Further, headsets should be in good condition and preferably have a functioning mute button that can be used when not talking. While most of today’s video conferencing software has a mute function, having a mute button on one’s headset can be more convenient.

While on the topic of sound, Hard Drive Recovery Group also touches on background noise. Headsets are purpose-built to make the user’s voice sound clear and eliminate outside noise. However, even with a top-of-the-line headset, there can still be factors outside of one’s control that can disturb meetings. From the neighbor’s lawn mowing to a baby suddenly crying, there are unavoidable things that can happen. However, Hard Drive Recovery Group has a solution: Krisp. This is an AI-powered noise-cancellation technology that can virtually eliminate those kinds of noises. While Krisp is normally a paid program the developers of Krisp have introduced a free tier of service in response to the coronavirus.

Hard Drive Recovery Group are experts in what they do, as evidenced by the company’s reviews. On the Google platform, the company has a perfect rating of 5 out of 5 Stars. In a recent review, Alica MacGeorge says, “My MacBook drive crashed, and these guys were the closest data recovery services company to my house. Real quick drive to their lab (off I-5), and Mike helped me with my case. Good price, excellent service!”

Those who want to learn more about Hard Drive Recovery Group and their services are welcome to visit the company's website to get started. They encourage interested parties to get in touch with Maureen Davies directly via email or phone, and the company can also be reached through the contact form on their website. Hard Drive Recovery Group maintains a presence on Facebook where they frequently post updates, share media and communicate with their customers.

Currently, Google Play Music users can stream music, as well as purchase full albums or single music files from the platform. Unfortunately, this will not be the case anyway as Google has rolled out a schedule for the impending closure of its music platform. In the last weeks of August, the Music Manager function of Google Play Music will not allow users to buy, pre-order, upload, or download music from Google Play Music anymore. Then, by October, the Google Play Music app will be rendered useless already as users cannot stream music from the app anymore. By the end of that month, Google will cancel subscriptions at the end of their subscribers' billing cycles, so they should have already migrated their Google Play Music library to a YouTube Music account or use a Google Takeout account to successfully migrate files. What will only be allowed until December in Google Play Music libraries will be uploads, playlists, likes, and purchases (but all those should have been migrated already, eh?).

But then, Google promises to inform users that they will be losing access to all this data by the end of the year. So, as of now, Google is recommending for all users to do the necessary migration and downloading as soon as possible, so that their music files will not get affected.

So, now that Google Play Music is closing shop, will there be other alternatives for its die-hard users? Will YouTube Music be really the only viable option for them? Knowing that YouTube is under the umbrella of the larger Google organization, it would seem to be a bad idea to put all your eggs in one basket, no matter how YouTube seems to be a very stable entity. So, for Google Play Music users who want to look at the larger and very vibrant array of options beyond the world of Google, here are some options to may want to consider keeping a top-notch music library:

Apple Music

Apple is quite aggressive in recruiting new users to its platform, offering access to Apple Music for free in the first three months to new users. Moreover, the company has also been beefing up its app on both Android and Microsoft to make sure all customer bases get enticed to jump ship and join the Apple bandwagon.

Apple Music has a key advantage over Spotify in that you can combine the songs you already own with the Apple Music streaming catalog. Siri users also get more robust voice controls for playback. Like Spotify, Apple Music has playlists that serve up songs based on your listening habits, but you can also listen to the Beats 1 Radio stations with human DJs at the helm.

Plex

Most of us who have come across the platform Plex know that it is a popular arena to stream popular movies and TV shows. Well, it seems that Plex has expanded their offerings just in time to possibly get a share of subscribers from Google Play Music. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.

Miss the days when MTV was music videos and not Sweet Sixteen parties? Let Plex fill that longing for the good ol' days through its new partnership with Loop Media. Plex Live TV subscribers are now able to stream music videos from 19 of Loop Media's music channels, which include Top Charting Singles, Hip Hop, and Country.

(Via: https://hometheaterreview.com/plex-delivering-music-videos-on-loop/)

Spotify

Who can forget one of the pioneers of music streaming? Spotify continues to be one of the strongest music streaming platforms with one of the largest libraries of music, with even former adversary Taylor Swift back in the fold. So, yes, you can stream Folklore to your heart’s content with a Spotify Premium account.

Spotify now supports video podcasts, starting with a handful of shows that can be viewed by most free and premium users. The company announced the news today, saying that all users where podcasts are supported will be able to not only listen to these shows but also watch them, both on desktop and mobile. For now, though, only certain podcasts are able to post video to Spotify; most podcasters won’t be able to upload their own video footage. Videos will start automatically when someone presses play, and they’ll sync with the audio feed, so if someone exits the app or locks their device while watching, the audio will continue.

(Via: https://www.theverge.com/2020/7/21/21332584/spotify-video-podcasts-feature-upload)

Tidal

Tidal rose in popularity because the music industry’s big names such as the power couple Jay Z and Beyonce have attached their names to it. Another draw of the platform is that artists provide users with exclusive content, so if you want a streaming service with loads of special features, go for Tidal.

As of August 20, 2019, Tidal now includes social features that make it easy for iOS and Android users to share music and video to their Instagram and Facebook stories. This is something we’ve seen with Spotify allowing users to post individual songs to a story. However, Tidal lets users post individual tracks or whole playlists which appear as still images on either social platform.

With a large number of people across the country having to work from home due to COVID-19, concerns surrounding the protection of data are quite prevalent. The pandemic has forced millions to work from home, and this can make it a bit more difficult to ensure that work documents remain safe.

“Other countries have imposed border lockdowns, curfews, and the US included, allow those who can, to work from home,” says the blog post. “As expected, employees will need to utilize company-provided devices in these uncertain times, as there is no timeline yet as to when the crisis will be completely defeated. But then, the ambiguity of the situation has been taken advantage of by cybercriminals who will exploit the paranoia of remote workers and expose data and hardware vulnerabilities in the systems they use.”

There are many ways to keep one’s data safe while working from home, and the blog post explores several. The first method of data protection the post mentions is the use of VPNs. A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, allows one to connect to a computer safely even when using a network that is not very secure (like most home networks which are not built to withstand sophisticated cyber attacks). A VPN gives one an added layer of privacy by hiding their browser history and other important bits of information from those who may be looking to use said information for nefarious purposes. Through the use of a VPN, one can ensure the safety of company documents.

Another highly effective way to protect company data is to store documents in the cloud. “During this era of remote work, cloud-based services are a great option to use to store and transfer data,” the blog post says. “When documents are stored in a cloud, people with access to it can have copies to them, removing the taxing procedure of emailing documents to those who need to have them. Data loss due to malfunctioning or misplaced computers is reduced, if not avoided altogether.”

USB sticks and memory cards present a very serious problem when it comes to data security. When working from home, many people may find themselves needing to transfer files, and they often use USB sticks to do this. However, these devices can carry malware that can seriously affect the files that one may have stored on their laptop or PC, and Hard Drive Recovery Group’s blog post discourages the use of storage devices like USBs and memory cards.

Using strong passwords is another practice that the Hard Drive recovery service highly recommends. “Hackers are having a field day with so many people working from home as they use less secure networks that do not necessarily have industrial-strength firewalls and anti-hacking software,” says the blog post. “Thus, if you are working from home, your best defense against hackers would be to make sure they can’t infiltrate your accounts with you using super strong and hard-to-guess passwords. With your accounts and devices being unhackable, you can be sure unauthorized people can’t get their hands on your documents easily.”

Hard Drive Recovery Group offers data recovery service to clients all over the country, and many of them have left great reviews of their work. G. Adams, a Houston Texas resident, says, “Not only was I surprised at the knowledge of Jeff, my technician, but also at the price. I had read a lot of posts on the web about hard drive recovery costing in the multiple thousand dollar area, and I admit I was very skeptical when I was quoted a price. Jeff quickly diagnosed my problem over the phone and emailed me some drive recovery software to try. Within a half an hour, I had my missing files back. That's what I call service!”
The pandemic may have shrunk our world as most of us experienced being on lockdown at any point in the past three months, but thanks to Netflix, it didn’t feel like we’ve not “seen” the outside world as the streaming app exposed us to so many TV shows and movies not only from Hollywood but from all corners of the world. Admit it, you grieved as Nairobi met her untimely death in her team’s second grand robbery outing in Money Heist. Of course, who wouldn’t want to consider staying in the spectacular Hotel del Luna even if we are pretty much alive? Moreover, what made Netflix tick to most users is that when a Netflix Original program premieres, all the episodes are already available on the same day. Honestly, who can say no to a Netflix marathon? The wormhole Netflix takes us to does last for hours and hours, and before you know it, weeks and months have gone by, taking our minds off the harsh realities of the pandemic.

So by now, you must think that most, if not all of us are already experts in operating Netflix. Well, just because we spend so much of our time using the app and having our fill of movies and TV shows doesn’t mean we already know how to maximize its use. Chances are, we are only exploring around 5% of this app that has so much content, we may need at least three lifetimes to finish everything it offers. But then, why not explore ways to maximize our use of the app so that we can thoroughly enjoy ourselves? Here are some Netflix features you may want to know, some of them old, others only recently introduced.

Scrub your viewing history

Just like when we delete our browsing history to make sure that nobody using the family laptop sees that we’ve been poring hours on online shopping sites, there is now a way for you to clean your Netflix viewing history, just so that nobody else knows what programs you watch.

Whether you’re partaking in the Love social media trend, don’t want your family to see 365 dni in your viewing history, or simply watched a particularly cheesy sitcom you’d rather forget about, we’ve got you covered.

(Via: https://decider.com/2020/06/23/how-to-delete-netflix-viewing-history/)

Look for “Hidden” Programming

With millions of shows available on the app, Netflix users would never run out of things to watch. So, if you are already losing interest and getting bored with your current movie and TV show selections, you may want to look into other genres, using codes that will open a whole new world of programming for you.

If you weren’t a binge watcher before the pandemic, odds are you’re one now. If you’re a long time binger and you’re looking to take things to the next level, or you’ve been trying it out for the first time over the past few months, we have some advice for you. After all, life hacks aren’t just for weird things to do with lemons.

(Via: https://filmdaily.co/news/netflix-codes/)

Can you watch Netflix offline?

TO answer the question, yes. You just need to know how. This is perfect for users who may have intermittent internet connection or if you have mustered enough courage, moving somewhere.

As it turns out, Netflix now allows you to download a lot of their content for offline viewing — this way, you can still bring your favorite TV shows with you on long trips and plane rides.

(Via: https://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/how-to-download-movies-and-tv-shows-from-netflix/)

Netflix with your friends

Nowadays, Netflix and chill is not only a solitary activity we thought it is. Just because we can’t crash into somebody’s couch and have the whole gang watch something doesn’t mean we can’t have our friends watch something on Netflix with us. As popularized by apps like Zoom, virtual gatherings are the best we can do with strict social distancing still the norm. And now, you can host a view party on Netflix!

Netflix Party is a free Google Chrome browser extension that allows users to watch movies and TV shows on the streaming platform together from different devices.

The extension, which is unaffiliated with Netflix, was released in mid-March when local officials had just started implementing coronavirus pandemic lockdown restrictions that have kept friends and family home for months in an effort to contain the spread of the virus.

(Via: https://www.foxbusiness.com/technology/how-to-use-netflix-party)

You may already be a master of Netflix, but of missing files, you are not. But we definitely are. While it used to be a joke when earbuds were introduced (remember the Saturday Night Live sketch about earbuds getting lost every time iPhone users dances, requiring them to keep on buying new pairs), but now it seems that those fears of earbuds popping out of restless users have been assuaged because the devices have been more popular than ever. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic occurred, which only helped in making earbuds more of a need than just a marketing ploy of some gadget manufacturers. Without cords and wires to disinfect every time you use them outdoors, the convenience and practicality these earbuds provide have indeed become more pronounced.

As the quality of these earbuds, particularly in relaying sound, improve through time, we consumers are spoiled for choices on what to buy. That being said, there is currently not one single set of earbuds that is perfect for all types of users. Those with iPhones and other Apple devices may of course prefer AirProds, while proud Samsung or other Android phone owners may prefer earbuds produced by their own device manufacturers. Then there are also those who want to use earbuds for their early morning walks (can’t go to the gym right now because of coronavirus fears) and those who use earbuds for multitasking. Those users may have specific features that are just about right for their specific needs.

One thing is for sure: All earbuds need to have a good seal in your ear. Make sure they fit your ears. After all, different users have different ear sizes, just like they have different preferences according to their needs. Alas, comfort trumps everything else. How can you really enjoy using your multitasking earbuds if they are too small that you find yourself checking if they’re still in your ear every 10 seconds like a paranoid person, or if they are too big that you feel like you have a huge block of earwax stuck in your ears?

So, without further ado, here are three of the best-reviewed earbuds available in the market today. As mentioned earlier, make sure your test them for comfort, not just for their function and features.

Why earbuds?

They're cool, they're chic, and they don't have messy wires for you to deal with, that's why.

When you make the transition to wireless headphones, the first thing you’ll notice is how convenient they are. Bluetooth technology allows you to be up to 33 feet away from your device without the signal being significantly degraded – this means you have a lot more freedom to move around without picking up your devices every single time.

(Via: http://www.dextroaudio.com/wireless-headphones-vs-wired/#:~:text=The%20Advantages%20of%20Wireless%20Headphone%20Technology&text=Bluetooth%20technology%20allows%20you%20to,your%20devices%20every%20single%20time.)

Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus

Of course, the leader of Android devices has produced a pretty grand pair of earbuds. Definitely recommended for Android users, not just those with Samsung devices.

Samsung Galaxy smartphone owners and anyone with an Android device should consider the new Galaxy Buds Plus. Although Wireless PowerShare is a Samsung exclusive, other important features including Spotify integration, are available across Android. Plus, even iPhone users will benefit from AAC support for lag-free media playback.

(Via: https://www.soundguys.com/samsung-galaxy-buds-plus-review-28974/)

Apple Airpods Pro

Of course, if Android has produced great earbuds, will the House of Steve Jobs be ever far behind? Airpods were the butt of all jokes when it was first introduced (the SNL sketch mentioned earlier featured the 1st generation of Airpods), but now, they are the hottest selling add-on to any music or audio-loving Apple gadget geek.

AirPods are as much a communication tool as they are a way to listen to music and movies. But, much to my surprise, Apple has a legitimately excellent pair of buds here.

(Via: https://www.digitaltrends.com/headphone-reviews/apple-airpods-pro-review/)

Jabra Elite 75t

Those who are allergic to anything that is blatantly branded as Apple or Android should definitely consider this nifty set of earbuds from Jabra.

So how does Jabra's next-generation Elite 75t -- which, unlike the AirPods Pro, doesn't offer active noise cancellation -- stand up to the current competition? Actually, quite well, which surprised me a bit.

(Via: https://www.cnet.com/reviews/jabra-elite-75t-review/)

Your search for a great pair of earbuds may be over, thanks to us, but your search for files that have gone missing because you accidentally deleted them or your laptop crashed isn't. Don't fret, we can help you. We have experts in data recovery who can get you back your important documents: https://www.harddriverecovery.org/data-recovery-services.html.

In this new post, the company touches upon the topic of online working. More specifically, they share their expert advice on ways to improve one's remote working experience, seeking to guide those forced to transition into it by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Maureen Davies, a representative of Hard Drive Recovery Group, states, "Transitioning into remote work can be a challenging experience for some people. This is a new environment that you are unfamiliar with, and while you may be uncomfortable at first, you can make your experience much more enjoyable by keeping a positive attitude, an open mind and following some of the tips that we have shared in this article."

The post itself is titled ‘How Do You Ace Working Remotely?' Across the entirety of their blog, however, the local hard drive specialists share advice on a broad range of topics, from how to stay safe on the web to different tools that can facilitate the experience.

The first tip given by the company in this case is to prioritize remote security. Since employees are not within the secure perimeter of their companies, it is difficult to ensure that data protection, privacy and security are properly set up. Common sense and avoiding suspicious sites is no longer enough in these situations, especially for those handling sensitive information. Attempts at security breaches are a common occurrence within companies. It is to be expected that this issue will only be amplified as employees work from their personal computers.

However, this does not mean that there are no precautions that can be taken to prevent such an outcome. Advice and guidance from a cybersecurity expert can help, though Hard Drive Recovery Group states that most companies that require this tend to already have an IT specialist on hand who can help their employees get set up.

The next piece of advice given by the local experts refers to communication. The company advises remote work newcomers to clarify communication policies beforehand. Clear and constant communication is an important factor in the success of a remote team. This can be difficult due to the innate challenges of remote work, though overcoming this should not be too cumbersome with group effort. This can include setting catch ups or checkpoint sessions at least once a day, with the purpose of ensuring that everybody still interacts with the rest of the team, the workload is still manageable and morale remains high.

The communication and teamwork aspect can be facilitated through the use of collaboration tools. Certain tools can help remote teams easily collaborate with each other, hold meetings and share important information and documents. This, combined with a thoughtful and caring attitude can go a long way in terms of improving the remote work experience.

"As difficult as the situation is, it can be made much easier to bear with a positive attitude. In fact, many are discovering that they prefer the remote work experience,” states Davies.

However, with more people working online and using their personal computer for work-related tasks, data loss problems have become a real issue. Fortunately, companies like Hard Drive Recovery Group can help people dealing with this situation. Davies states, “If you are working from home and have lost your valuable data, the only way to recover this information is by hiring data recovery experts. At the Hard Drive Recovery Group, we can help you through this difficult situation, getting your lost data back and leaving you set up and ready to continue working in no time.”

Hard Drive Recovery Group offers free consultations and diagnosis sessions for their clients, showing their outstanding commitment to customer service. We consume so much tech so it’s only natural for companies to produce much as well to keep up with the demand. Thus, it is no wonder that laptops, air conditioners, television sets, headphones, microwaves, smartphones, and other electronic gadgets have ended up as electronic waste, which the world has also been producing at astounding levels. In fact, a 2019 report states that humanity has generated record numbers of e-waste, and as with its non-electronic counterparts, increased wastes will always present a new challenge. have been

According to the Global E-Waste Monitor, a United Nations University, International Telecommunication Union, and International Solid Waste Association effort, 53.6 million metric tons of e-waste was produced in 2019, which is higher compared to 2014 levels (when the first report was published) by 9.2 million metric tons. Out of this, only 17% of the total has been recycled.

Things have gone better, but still not good enough

Actually, things have improved with the world’s increased efforts in recycling. Whereas during the 1990s and early 200s, people were at a loss on what to do with their old electronics, there have been more efforts in recycling. But then, there is also an increase in the consumption of electronics, so recycling efforts have to keep up.

“Once e-equipment becomes waste, it is hazardous. If you just dumped it in the environment, it would cause a problem,” says Richard Kirkman, chief technology and innovation officer at Veolia. Kirkman has spent the past 20 years working in the waste sector, and has amassed knowledge about seemingly every recycling process out there. But when he started, he says, everything was going to landfill. “Things have got much better [over time].”

(Via: https://rethink.ft.com/articles/growing-problem-ewaste/)

What actually happens to e-waste?

E-waste is a huge issue because electronics contain harmful chemicals that when thrown into the landfill and left to rot, may seep into the ground and deeper into water sources that obviously, will poison us all.

Toxic additives also leak into the soil. Around 50 tonnes of mercury are contained in “undocumented flows of e-waste” annually. Mercury can damage the human brain and coordination system in large doses, and often causes soil pollution in areas around landfill.

(Via: https://www.cbronline.com/news/e-waste-un-report)

So, what can we contribute to solving this problem?

As consumers of electronics, we have to be more conscious of throwing broken gadgets. A good number of them can be recycled, so we need to look into ways of throwing our obsolete or gadgets responsibly.

The best way to ensure that your old electronics are not contributing to the e-waste problem is by properly recycling them — a task that can be easier said than done. You can’t simply toss your old computer in the recycling bin and be done with it.

(Via: https://www.mic.com/p/e-waste-is-a-harmful-growing-problem-heres-how-to-recycle-your-old-electronics-28796760)

But if your soft copies of documents go missing and cannot be located even in your device's Recycle Bin, then you might have a problem. But not a problem we at Hard Drive Recovery Group cannot solve. See for yourself what we can do here: https://www.harddriverecovery.org/professional-data-recovery.html.

Yes, dear Gen X and baby boomer reader, I am talking about similar technology that brought us such technological advancements as the cassette tape (Remember where we used to listen to our jams to? Mixed tapes for road trips and the format for our boomboxes and Walkmans before the CD rendered them obsolete?) and the VHS (home videos galore before they became “digital”). Apparently, data storage geeks have not given up on that technology and have continuously developed them throughout the years and now, it seems that it will outpace the progress done on the “traditional” hard drives we currently enjoy. How's that for a “revenge of the throwback nerds”?

But before you, movie pirate, data fiend, or storage junkie, rejoice, hold your horses for a bit. The current batch of tape drives, the ones that have the capacity to contain mind-boggling amounts of data is not for personal use. They are currently available for use for data centers only, as their physical formats do not allow them to be connected to PCs and laptops yet, and these are the gadgets that personal users usually connect their hard drives to. So, we still have to exercise a bit of patience and wait for this piece of tech to be available to us in a few years, maybe? In the meantime, let us be happy with the advances being made in storage.

What is this tape drive?

Tape drives use tapes to store data and Fujifilm, a leader in this field recently announced they have produced a tape drive with a capacity of 384 TB! That is 384 times the capacity of the current popular standard of 1 TB in hard drives. That is an astounding amount of music and photo files that can fit in that drive!

At 384TB, a single LTO-13 tape is likely to be the single biggest unit of storage in the world, far outclassing hard disk drives (with capacities stalling, having grown by only 2TB per generation) and solid state drives, which reached 100TB in 2018 and then stopped growing.

(Via: https://www.techradar.com/news/heres-why-tape-will-always-surpass-hard-drives-and-ssds-in-storage)

No stopping tape technology

And if that’s not enough, pundits predict constant improvements in tape technology with native storage capacities of 12 TB (already impressive, isn’t it?) set to improve in the coming months.

While hardly anyone expects tape-based backup to become the dominant approach it once was, state-of-the-art tape systems now provide a native storage capacity of 12 TB with LTO-8, and even higher with the upcoming LTO-9 -- better than hard disk storage and often faster than the cloud.

(Via: https://searchdatabackup.techtarget.com/feature/Why-tape-based-backup-is-making-a-comeback)

Enjoy improvement in the HD sphere

As mentioned earlier, tape drives are not for personal use yet. So, for the meantime, let us appreciate the advancements made with hard drives, which are no joke as well.

Long gone are the days when gigabytes were a precious resource (and terabytes were simply unheard of): Today’s hard drives are bigger and cheaper than ever, and if you’re looking for some additional physical storage for your precious data, then you don’t have to look too far to find a good cheap external hard drive that will meet your needs — without draining your bank account.

(Via: https://www.digitaltrends.com/dtdeals/best-cheap-external-hard-drive-deals/)

And if you have forgotten to back up your important files in an external hard drive and your laptop gets broken, you may be experiencing this: https://www.harddriverecovery.org/hard-drive-crash.html. The company is also pleased to offer their professional data recovery services to those who have accidentally lost their files due to malfunctioning hardware or corrupted software/data.

As noted in the post, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced many people to work from home, so office meetings now have to take place via video conference calls. Many of the technicalities regarding the setup of video conferences are easy and relatively user-friendly. However, there is still the problem of how these video conferences can be done properly. In light of this, the blog post explores video sharing etiquette and clarifies that just because people are at home, it does not mean that they are allowed to act unprofessional. In fact, maintaining credibility and professionalism is of the utmost importance regardless of the setting. In line with this, Hard Drive Recovery Group published three useful tips on video conferencing etiquette, giving advice on what people can do even before the meeting starts.

First, the blog post highlights the importance of having a clear agenda before setting up a virtual meeting. This eliminates the frustrations some people experience when there is a meeting where everybody just sits around, waiting for all attendees to be present. Unfortunately, when the meeting is finally taking place, there may be times when even the presiding officer will take a while to get things in order. Unlike physical meetings, people can find it difficult to express their frustration in virtual meetings because of the lack of physical interaction. Whether a meeting is physical or virtual, however, it is very important to have a clear agenda that outlines what the meeting is all about. With a clear agenda, attendees know what to expect and can estimate how long the video conference will run. Furthermore, if there is an element of participation in the meeting, it gives people an opportunity to prepare talking points as well as manage their time better.

Next, Hard Drive Recovery Group recommends that video call participants get their devices ready even before starting the video call. It is important to check on the hardware and if the internet speeds are stable enough to prevent any problem. Unfortunately, there are some internet connection issues that are not so easy to fix, and if such problems happen, the attendee experiencing difficulties should inform the presiding officer beforehand. Alternatively, asking for everyone’s permission to have the meeting recorded is one of the best solutions to connectivity issues as it allows them to update themselves later on what happened during the meeting. Furthermore, it is important to make sure that all the participants have the correct meeting link, dial-in number and the app downloaded on their phone or computer ahead of time.

People should always prepare a presentable background as well. It is true that not everyone has a home office, but a background full of kitchenware like pots and pans can easily distract other attendees. When attending a virtual meeting, a simple bare wall is acceptable enough to serve as a video call background. Alternatively, some video conference platforms have background features that can help solve this issue. These video conferencing apps include Microsoft Teams and Skype that allows participants to blur their background. Zoom similarly enables users to choose a virtual background.

With the current rapid spread of COVID-19, people have been asked to stay indoors for their own safety and the safety of others. As such, it is important to learn to adapt to this unusual series of circumstances. Hard Drive Recovery Group emphasizes the importance of handling meetings professionally and respectfully, even if it is done online, and also advises employees to take care of their company computers and laptops. Meanwhile, those who have accidentally lost their files while working at home may contact Hard Drive Recovery Group to avail their professional data recovery services. The company has years of experience handling such cases and guarantees the full recovery of damaged or lost files.

From the current landscape of social networking, it seems that millennials have passed the throne of power, influence, and sheer number of users among all social media platforms to the younger generation. So much so that when the older generations, particularly the Baby Boomers dare ask the young set what their contributions to society are, the young ones would just reply, “OK Boomer” and employer their arsenal of hashtags and followers to prove that what they are busy on the World Wide Web with is providing a huge contribution to contemporary society.

But has social media, used by Gen Z’s and run by Gen Xers and millennials, really made a remarkable difference in the way we live today? With so many movements and happenings in the world right now, can the younger generations rightfully claim that social media platforms have brought in more good in the world by shining a light on these various issues and challenges? Has social media itself been behaving properly?

Is the Big One racist?

Facebook – the grand daddy of all social media platforms, everyone’s entry level social media platform, has lately been again, subject to speculations of racism. As if the company isn’t in a tough spot already with allegations of the platform tolerating the propagation of fake news is not enough, they have to face this new issue. With the Black Lives Matter gathering so much momentum after the George Floyd incident, Facebook cannot afford this backlash.

Facebook is facing new allegations of racial discrimination by an African American manager and two Black job applicants whose qualifications reportedly exceeded the requirements but were nevertheless rejected, according to the Washington Post.

(Via: https://gizmodo.com/facebook-is-biased-against-black-workers-new-complaint-1844247942

YouTube stars in hot water

With race relations in America in the spotlight yet again, it can really hurt a social media personality’s career if he or she produced content in the past that may have been deemed as harmless in the past but really inappropriate nowadays. The scary thing about social media is that there are receipts to haunt you of your past actions.

Dawson is one of a number of white YouTube stars who have been attempting to address their past use of racist depictions, characters, and stereotypes in comedic videos this week. Apologies for racist videos have also come from Jenna Marbles and David Dobrik, and responses from viewers have been mixed as fans try to figure out how to hold major creators accountable for their past actions. The timing comes amid ongoing anti-racism protests around the country.

(Via: https://www.theverge.com/2020/7/2/21306858/shane-dawson-jenna-marbles-youtube-blackface-racism-content)

Me Too Goes to Twitter

The Me Too movement, which experienced its heyday in 2019, may have taken a back seat to more popular advocacies currently, namely BLM and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but it still continues to create headlines. With former Hollywood bigwig Harvey Weinstein found guilty of multiple sexual misconducts, some women have taken to Twitter to accuse famous Hollywood personalities of misbehaviors. But are they for real, though?

Online celebrities such as Twitter personality Jovan Hill and TikTokers Ondreaz Lopez and Cody Orlove have all responded to accusations of sexual assault and abuse, apologizing to the accusers but also denying the extent of their claims.

(Via: https://www.insider.com/me-too-allegations-movement-a-list-celebs-streamers-bieber-tiktokers-2020-6)

Facebook boycott gains traction

Over Facebook’s weak action on hate speech and fake news, some multinationals have taken it to themselves to reduce ad spending on the platform. And the companies including themselves in the boycott is increasing.

For the first time in its history, Facebook is facing an organized boycott from advertisers set to begin July 1st. It’s not from small companies, either — large corporations including Hershey, Honda, and Verizon have stopped their spending.

(Via: https://www.theverge.com/21307454/unilever-verizon-coca-cola-starbucks-microsoft-ads-facebook

PSA: Be safe

Amidst all the controversy surrounding them, social media platforms have finally taken concrete action to contribute to the effort to tame the COVID-19 pandemic.

After a Parks and Recreation-style viral clip of Floridians protesting over mask use as a direct attack on the airwaves God gave us, yesterday Facebook announced the launch of an information campaign reminding users to wear a face mask when they go outside.

In a statement the company said it would add messaging to its news feed and Instagram’s homepage to encourage people to cover their faces, and will direct people away from fake news and towards a “COVID-19 Information Centre”, which includes links to the CDC’s advice on infection spread.

(Via: https://i-d.vice.com/en_uk/article/jgxj5k/facebook-instagram-wear-face-mask-reminder)

In the meantime, if you have problems with lost documents, you need not rant on social media or launch a movement. Hard Drive Recovery Group is here to help you.
